A gym near the Monterey Regional Airport reopened Tuesday afternoon after it had been shuttered by the city because its sewage system wasn't working.

Fitness Evolution on the 2000 block of Garden Road reopened at 4:30 p.m., according to the Monterey Permit and Inspection Services division.

Monterey County Health Department Assistant Director Ric Encarnacion said they received a complaint Nov. 22 that raw sewage was coming up through a floor drain in a restroom.

He said it told the business to repair the problem by Dec. 2. When a department employee inspected Thursday, they found the problem had not been fixed but water had been turned off to stop the sewage issue.

The city then made the decision to close the gym.

Building official John Kuehl said the sewage leak was caused by a faulty pump that halted its ability to dispose of waste.

Fitness Evolution spokeswoman Bobbi Sargenti said Tuesday afternoon compensation for customers would be done on a "case by case basis."

She said she could not get into specifics because they were still working out the details.

The building is also home to Cypress Coast Physical Therapy, which has reopened as well.
