Dayton native opens Practice Fitness studio - Dayton Daily News

With so many fitness trends around, the average person can get confused and going to a gym where there are often dozens of machines and many other people vying for the same pieces of equipment can get frustrating.

Patrick Przyborowski, a Dayton native who spent many years away from this area before returning to his roots about a decade ago, knows there is growing interest in fitness among the general population, but there is also a desire for “quick fixes” and many questions about how to best become “fit for life.”

What the business does

Przborowski’s business Practice Fitness, located at 5575 Far Hills Ave. in Washington Twp., can best be described as a personal training studio that empowers clients to learn to be fit for life. “Our main programs are Pilates, yoga, personal training, TRX circuit training and functional movement,” Przborowski said. “We offer mostly small group or individual classes by appointment. In fact 85% of our business is standing appointments, which makes us a little different - almost a boutique studio since we don’t offer large scale classes like a gym.”

In fact Practice Fitness’ largest classes hold up to 12 people so clients can expect individual attention, whether they start with a private or semi-private package.

Practice Fitness instructors go through extensive training in STOTT Pilates, which is a contemporary approach to the more traditional method.

How the business got started

Przborowski was on a meditation retreat in the south of France and hurt his back while sitting for a long period of time. “I started practicing Pilates while doing physical therapy when I got home to Dayton because I was curious about it,” he said. Ten years ago he started practicing Pilates in this area because he knew it represented a chance to make a positive difference for people. “I’ve always worked in the service industry in some level,” he said. “I became a Pilates instructor in Cincinnati and eventually opened my studio here five years ago.”

Practice Fitness grew out of Przborowski’s frustration with what he called the “large gym experience.” “Most gyms have rooms full of equipment and offer generalized instruction and they don’t have a lot of knowledge about how to train,” he said. “Once I started to learn more about the industry, I realized that people really had a need to know more about fitness, flexibility and balance.”

According to Przborowski, the focus at Practice Fitness is always on the individual client and the desire to live well. “Most people come in because they either want to look good, feel good or move well,” he said. “Our goal is, rather than drawing them toward a particular modality, to try to work hard to find out which of these three things is most important to them and we tailor programs to meet individual needs. We also know that individual instruction can be more costly than going to a gym so we provide our clients with activities they can do at home every day and incorporate into their regular activities.”

Plans

Practice Fitness recently celebrated its fifth anniversary but Przborowski said he plans to continue to expand, offering more cardio options and continuing to focus especially and the 35 and over population. “There is a huge segment of Baby Boomers that wants to be active,” he said. “We spent a lot of time with these clients working on stability, building core strength and balance, but our approach is kinder and gentler than some other methods out there. We want people to be interested in fitness for life and we want to keep people looking good, feeling great and moving well for the rest of their lives.”
