Fitness: Running as a stress reliever - San Jose Mercury News

Name: Ankita Bhanot

Age: 16

City: San Jose

My favorite workout: I like to run. I run about 3 miles total. It is a stress reliever and helps me get my mind off things, especially when I'm listening to music on my iPod and surrounded by nature.

How often I exercise: I try to go every day. There are days when something comes up and I don't have time to go, but even then I at least try to run for 15 minutes. My main goal is to be active every day, even when I can't run the full 3 miles.

What motivates me: My body feels great after a run and it keeps me energized throughout the day. I find that I'm in a better mood and can get my work done faster after I exercise.

The hardest part is: Finding time between my homework and extracurriculars. I have to force myself to stop working and go, otherwise I'll keep putting it off.

What it teaches me: Self-discipline and staying healthy. It's not just the exercising; it's the fact that I put my mind to something and then stick to it. I think that's an important lesson that can be applied to every part of my life. It also teaches me that I must treat my body well.
