Statistics might show that childhood obesity is on the rise but in the RE-2 School District, students rebel against being a number, a negative one at that.
Cat Becker and Patty Woods, co-leaders of the Woodland Park High School wellness committee, had the children moving during the lunch hour Nov. 20.
The committee’s goal is to have a fitness challenge each month throughout the school year.
While the idea was to increase student physical activity, from the looks of things, having fun was part of the challenge.
In an exercise to strengthen their backs and leg muscles, students had their backs against the wall, literally, trying to beat the record of 13 minutes and 30 seconds.
They had three chances throughout the week to beat their own time.
The goal of the fitness challenges, presented by the high school wellness committee, is to enhance physical fitness for all.
For Heidi Howard, the district’s wellness coordinator, healthy lifestyle is all-encompassing. “We want to be creative in how we incorporate health and fitness during the school day,” she said.
