Firefighters from numerous area departments worked to extinguish a huge fire late Saturday at an apartment and townhome complex near Grapevine Mills mall.
There were no reports of serious injuries, though some firefighters received treatment because of the heat.
At least 75 firefighters were called to the five-alarm blaze at the Enclave at Grapevine Apartments on Grapevine Mills Circle, near State Highways 114 and 121.
Grapevine Deputy Fire Chief Mark Ashmead said the fire broke out about 8:45 p.m. on the third floor of a building under construction. The flames spread to an adjacent building, which tenants were expected to begin occupying this week. A third building also sustained damage.
Grapevine requested assistance from nearby fire departments, including Colleyville, Euless, Flower Mound and Keller.
Residents reported hearing at least two transformers explode in the fire.
Robert Head, who said he has lived at the complex for about a month with his girlfriend, credited emergency personnel for ensuring that residents were evacuated safely. He said about 14 families were living in the townhomes in the new complex.
“We’re just lucky the wind was blowing away from our home,” he said.
Electricity had been shut off to some of the complex, and officials were unsure when residents might be allowed to return to parts of the property that were undamaged.
Investigators were working to inspect the scene Saturday night, but there was no immediate report of the fire’s cause.
The flames could be seen from miles away, drawing crowds of spectators, including from the nearby mall.
Shabnam Keshtkaran said she was shopping at the mall with her family when they found out about the fire.
“The lights went out and then came on, and then we heard an explosion,” she said.
The heat was so intense they could feel it at the mall, she said.
