Free yoga Saturday at Silver City Rec Center - Silver City Sun News

SILVER CITY >> Strike a pose this Saturday to celebrate International Restorative Yoga Day.

Don't know one, that's fine, you can learn in one of three free, introductory classes in Restorative Yoga at the Silver City Recreation Center, taught by Marilynn Freeman.

When most people hear the word "yoga", they think of "pretzel-poses" that seem challenging or even unattainable. Restorative Yoga is a passive practice that uses props such as blankets or blocks, to minimize the amount of work the muscles are doing in a pose. Most poses are done on the floor and are held for several minutes at a time. Poses can be modified to accommodate most physical limitations. The use of supportive props and blankets allows the body feels cradled and safe, similar to the way a baby becomes calmer when swaddled.

A restorative practice can rest your body, stretch your muscles, lower your heart rate and blood pressure, calm your nervous system and move you into a peaceful state of relaxation. These poses allow you to activate your capacity for health and wellness. Yoga allows us to become our own healers.

The majority of students find the poses restful and relaxing. One student termed them "nap-asanas", or napping poses. The practice of being still and restful can create anxiety for others. People who need constant stimulus don't realize that they are accumulating stress in their bodies. If not checked, stress can create more serious problems and leads to disease. In fact, stress is a major causative factor in heart disease, cancer and a number of other chronic and acute diseases. How many of us really take time to remove stress on a daily basis?

Saturday is your opportunity to let go of your stress and return to a more relaxed state.

Marilyn Freeman is a certified Relax & Renew Trainer and has been teaching yoga for more than a decade. She has been a student of yoga since 1976.
