Adidas on Wednesday unveiled the Smart Run watch, a wrist-worn fitness device and music player featuring the company's miCoach interactive training service, GPS mapping, heart rate monitoring, and more.
The miCoach Smart Run is priced at $399 and will be made available in November, Adidas said.
The watch runs Android 4.1.1, has an accelerometer that counts runners' steps to provide data on stride rate, utilizes GPS to log running routes and track speed and distance, and features a 1.45-inch, 184-by-184-pixel resolution, full-color touch screen. A built-in MP3 player combines with a Bluetooth wireless earpiece to play music during runs and to provide coaching tips via the miCoach service.
The Smart Run's 410mAh lithium ion battery provides a 14-day charge when the watch is running in casual mode, but marathon mode cuts that down to just eight hours and training mode knocks it down to four. The device has 4GB of onboard storage, with three-fourths of that space devoted to storing music.
The stainless steel watch has a magnesium backplate, a soft-touch silicon strap, and weighs in at 2.8 ounces.
"By combining the latest innovations, such as the Mio Wrist Based Continuous Heart Rate Technology, design, and ease of use navigation, we consciously broke the template that defines other running watches," Simon Drabble, director of miCoach at Adidas, said in a statement.
"But it's not just that which sets us apart from the competition. As part of the miCoach training system, it truly unlocks human potential by making smart training easy and accessible. Whether you're starting a new running program, training for a 10k, or competing in another marathon, miCoach Smart Run will make your training more efficient so you get the results you want."
The Web-synced miCoach system guides runners through interval training regimens, using both a vibrating motor to alert wearers to coaching tips and providing audio coaching via the Bluetooth headset. In addition to guidance on pacing during training, the coaching system offers "more than 400 anatomically correct animations" to help runners add strength and flexibility exercises to workouts.
"Many runners fail to get the most out of their current running watches. Building training plans, transferring workouts, and personalizing display information is cumbersome with these devices. With Smart Run we change this. It is fully integrated with our Web platform so training plans, completed workouts, and settings are synced," Drabble said.
Smart Run buyers will get free access to the miCoach Web platform and training community, as well as free mobile apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 devices.
Smart Run is just one of a handful of fitness devices that were introduced in recent weeks, including the $50 Fitbug Orb[1] , the $130 Fitbit Force[2] , and the $149 Nike+ FuelBand SE[3] .
