Kern County kids backslid a bit on some key fitness measures from the 2011 to 2012 school years, according to data released by the state and crunched by The Californian Wednesday.
The numbers come from a testing of children in grades 5, 7 and 9 in multiple categories: aerobic capacity, body composition, abdominal strength, trunk extension strength, upper body strength and flexibility.
In what the state calls two of the most important categories, aerobic capacity and body composition, the overall Kern County numbers from the 2011-2012 to 2012-2013 school years mostly worsened a bit when you look at the percentage of children in the so-called healthy fitness zone.
The data show that in 2012-2013:
* The percentage of Kern kids in the healthy fitness zone for aerobic capacity was 54.7 for 5th graders; 55.8 percent for 7th graders; and 56.7 percent for 9th graders.
* The percentage of Kern children in the healthy fitness zone for body composition was 47.1 for 5th graders; 48.6 for 7th graders; and 56.2 for 9th graders.
Californiawide:
* The percentage of kids in the healthy fitness zone for aerobic activity was 63 percent for 5th graders; 64.4 percent for 7th graders; and 63 percent for 9th graders.
* The percentage in the health fitness zone for body composition was 53.2 percent for 5th graders; 56.1 percent for 7th graders; and 58.9 percent for 9th graders.

The AIS Cancer Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital will host free healthy eating workshops Tuesday.
The workshops will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cancer center's third floor conference room, 2620 Chester Ave.
Light refreshments will be offered, along with free recipe cards. The event is free but seating is limited. Call 323-4673 to RSVP.
Kaiser Permanente's Get Fit Kern County 5K/1K Fun Run is set for Nov. 2.
On-site registration and packet pick-up starts at 7:30 a.m., the run takes off at 9 a.m. at Kaiser Permanente Ming Medical Offices at 8800 Ming Ave., leading through Cal State Bakersfield's campus.
A health expo and kid zone will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. A food drive will be held and donations will be collected for the Community Action Partnership of Kern.
