'Homeland,' Season 3, Episode 5, 'The Yoga Play': TV Recap - Wall Street Journal (blog)

Kent Smith/Showtime

Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson in ‘The Yoga Play’ episode of ‘Homeland’

A mystery man purporting to be on business enters the U.S. He meets a contact on a remote road and exchanges cars. It is assumed to be Saul’s target, the Iranian official behind the CIA attack.

Peter Quinn visits Saul, who’s going on a duck hunt with politicians in the hopes he’ll secure support as the official director of the CIA. Saul lets Peter in on his grand plan to dangle Carrie in front of the Iranians and draw in his target, and says it’s working.

Dana and Leo are still driving away from home. Jessica unexpectedly turns up at Carrie’s house for help. Seems she has forgiven Carrie for sleeping with her husband Brody (all water under the bridge now!) and is asking for her help.

Carrie has flushed all her meds down the toilet. In trying to help Jessica, she calls the FBI, who wants nothing to do with her. She calls Max (Virgil’s brother) to tell him she wants to put “the yoga play” in action to fool surveillance. She calls him back, their conversation now monitored, to tell him she’s off to yoga. In the parking garage, Quinn appears and warns Carrie not to test the surveillance – she’s under a lot of pressure now. She thanks him for having her back and for visiting her at the hospital but insists she knows what she’s doing.

Carrie loses her surveillance at the yoga studio, and slips out back to meet Virgil and Max. They’re going to Bethesda, to wait for FBI Agent Hall to show up. When he does, Carrie approaches him but is met with resistance. Agent Hall says he’s been listening in on Dana and Leo for weeks and compares their love to “Romeo and Juliet.” (Aside: Before she was Carrie, Claire Danes was Juliet!) Carrie points out that Dana is the one person Brody would reach out to, and threatens Agent Hall that if anything happens to the girl, it’ll be on him.

Saul shows up at the duck hunt and Sen. Lockhart is present, informing him they’re hunting geese, not duck. Lockhart says the president is concerned about morale at the CIA. They’ve discussed changes in clandestine operations, including more support for military drones rather than human intelligence operatives. Saul’s against it, and says he won’t budge just for Lockhart’s support for his nomination as director.

Lockhart reveals that the president is in fact nominating him for the position, not Saul. “So this isn’t really about tempering your views. It’s about changing them. If, that is, you want a job in my CIA,” Lockhart says. Saul is stunned.

The mystery man travels to the house that looks like the one where Carrie met the lawyers. Inside, assistants have laid out his guns. The man asks to see the interview room.

Meanwhile, Dana and Leo stop for gas. While paying inside, Dana overhears a news report about them, suggestion there’s more to Leo’s past – a suicide pact with his brother that went awry. She confronts Leo and, realizing he’s been lying, she turns herself over to the police. The one thing she can’t abide is another lie.

Saul calls Carrie and says her “fool’s errand” to help find Dana has compromised their mission, and the surveillance team is gone. Carrie insists she wasn’t made, but Saul doesn’t believe her.

At the hunting lodge, Lockhart is announced as the president’s nominee for CIA director. He thanks Saul for doing a fine job in the meantime. Saul says the senator has made a career of criticizing the CIA, and will have to win over the men and women in the field, otherwise he’ll just be “another political appointee holding up his finger to see which way the wind is blowing.” He leaves, but he won’t find comfort at home – his estranged wife Mira is having dinner with a colleague from Mumbai.

Carrie puzzles over whether or not she was indeed made, and if the deal with the Iranian official is off. While she’s sleeping, the official’s assistants break into her home and grab her before she can get to her gun. They force her to strip and check her for any devices. They break her phone and tell her to put on their clothes, including a bag over her head.

Quinn suspects the watch is back on and calls Saul, but he’s too far to see anything. He disobeys Saul and goes in for a closer look. It’s too late – Carrie is gone.

“We know who’s got her. We’re back in business,” Saul says.

“She’s on her own,” Quinn says.

“She’s always been on her own,” Saul replies.

Carrie’s taken to meet the official – now under no cover, and without the CIA listening in. “Carrie Mathison. You’re in good shape. Must be all that yoga,” the official says.

Readers, what do you think of this week’s episode? Was Carrie’s cover blown when she attempted to help Jessica find Dana? Is Carrie still protected by the CIA at this point? What’s Dana going to do now? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
