Belleville council to vote on demolition bid for former yoga center - Belleville News Democrat

The City Council tonight will consider a bid to demolish the building at 18 S. High St. for more parking.

The $28,000 bid is from Hank's Excavating and Landscaping.

Aldermen will vote on a motion for the bid at the regulary scheduled council meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 101 S. Illinois St.

The city in July bought the building from John Conkright, who owns Ben's downtown, to turn the space into 35 parking spots as part of the existing lot.

The building formerly housed the Sukha Yoga Center, which is now at 8 S. Church St.

Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert said purchasing the building was a good investment because it positions the city to build a parking structure at the intersection in later years if necessary.

A 2012 parking study found that the best location for a new downtown parking garage was at South High and East Washington streets.

"Now we don't need to negotiate down the road," Eckert said. "We won't need to deal with any more property acquisition there."

The city recently completed a public lot at B and High streets.
