Welcome to our weekly Flashback Friday feature, where we dig into The Oregonian's photo archives to show off images from years past. Press the "+ Caption" button prior to viewing the slideshow to read the captions above. You can also view as a photo essay. [1]
Sorry, Shake Weight[2] , but you're about 30 years late to a party where you would have fit right in; Richard Simmons[3] hosted the shindig, tube socks[4] were the must-wear clothing and Jazzercise the staple activity.
America decided to shape up in the 1980s, and that generation's dedication to "get physical"[5] left us with a great look at the fashion and ideals back in the day, along with some unintentional comedy gold. Fitness-video hosts, sports technology advancements and gear meant for movement led to fun new ways to shed pounds and stay active. Suzanne Somers introduced us to the Thighmaster[6] in the early 90s to put a bow on the era, and we haven't looked back much since.
To pay tribute, we dug into the photo vaults to see what the locals were wearing and which exercise activities were big in Oregon three decades ago. From group exercise regimens at work, to hula-hooping and jumping-jacks, much has gone out of style. However, walk down a Portland street to see what the hipster generation is wearing or visit an aerobics class in your neighborhood gym and you'll notice we're still quite the same.
If you have a suggestion for a future gallery of historic photos, leave a comment or shoot me an email.
