Robin Runner was destined for the path that she, well, runs in life.
The 41-year-old food/fitness blogger, Lancaster resident, wife and mother of two tries to set healthy examples for her children and fans of her blog by leading a fit lifestyle, which, of course, includes running.
It is this attitude that prompted Runner (it's the name she married into) to apply to be a part of the Cabot Creamery Cooperative's first-ever Cabot Fit Team. The team is comprised of two Cabot family members and eight food and fitness bloggers who represent the national brand at events and races throughout the year, according to a press release from the company.
The team competed in August in the Beach to Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine (they placed third overall), toured the Cabot facilities and attended a lobster feast for the team and family members. Runner says her passion is a "perfect match with the Cabot brand" and she is grateful to represent the company.
"I have always been a fan of Cabot," Runner says. "They are so small; they even name their cows. They aren't some huge company that has lost touch with fresh and good food. It's that kind of company that you believe in their business."
Runner's farm-to-table style of cooking is featured on her blog, kneadtocook.com[1] , and Facebook page of the same name. Her Facebook page has more than 32,000 followers and her site gets more than 1 million hits a month, she says. She also is on Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter. Her recipe for Pumpkin Spiced Almonds (see recipe section) is "one of her most-repinned recipes."
"You have to be on social media these days," says Runner, who is a self-proclaimed Type A personality and endorphin junkie.
Another favored recipe is her Egg Nog Bread with rum egg nog glaze.
"You can control the amount of glaze you use," Runner says. "My friends usually get extra."
Growing up experimenting in the kitchen, Runner tries to make food approachable, foolproof and healthy. Her Facebook page was started "mainly to share recipes with others" and was the catalyst for her blog about two years ago. She also uses local, in-season produce as much as possible.
"You won't find me using strawberries in January," Runner says.
Through blogging, Runner hopes that she is teaching her children and others how to eat healthy and pure.
"I like trying to trick my family into eating good, clean food," Runner says. She's applied many of the lessons she has learned in the kitchen to her running.
If a recipe doesn't work the first time, she keeps at it until it does. She is also known to post her fails and her "kitchen messes" on her Instagram account.
"I know I am not the fastest," Runner says. "But running races is about so much more. It's about continuing to try. It's about challenging yourself."
Having lost 30 pounds over the past year and shaving several minutes off of her mile time, Runner works out six days a week and alternates her running days with gym workouts.
"I just want to be the best version of myself that I can," Runner says. "The same goes for the food that I cook and share."
