Participants in the Physical Training 101 class perform front deltoid raises during a workout session at Holloman Air Force Base.
The Balanced Eating, Work out Effectively, Living Longer (BE WELL) program, received an overhaul on July 1 of this year, to better help airmen get the tools they need to overcome areas of weakness in their physical training, whether it strength, endurance or form.
The new BE WELL program is designed to give airmen options and resources that will improve their overall fitness. The program's main focus is geared toward for airmen who have failed a physical fitness assessment because they could not pass one or all core areas. However, all airmen who want to improve fitness and nutrition can benefit from the program.
"The difference in the program is that when an airman fails a physical assessment test now they still attend the BE WELL class, but they also will meet with their unit fitness program manager and commander to discuss what actions need to be taken to help that airman," said TSgt Candace Farrington 49th Aero Medical Squadron, non-commissioned officer in charge of the Health and Wellness Center.
The new program utilizes the Health and Wellness Center and Domenici Fitness Center by offering five different resources that the commander and airmen can choose from Better Body Better Life which focuses on the importance of nutrition, a running client program that breaks down how to be an efficient runner, ultimate fitness classes that focus on improving muscle strength, BE WELL online and Military OneSource.
"I attended the Better Body Better Life class due to
failing my PT test, and the class was very beneficial in helping me increase my knowledge of how to be a healthier person," said TSgt Kaylan Wargo, 49th Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle operator dispatcher.
"This new BE WELL program will take a more hands on approach to complete all the required programs and see them through the whole process until they re-test," said Farrington. "Before airmen were required to attend a one-time BE WELL class and then it was the individual's responsibility to improve the areas they needed to pass their physical assessment test."
Air Force Instruction 36-2905 fitness program allows up to 10 duty days for a member to complete one of the interventions.
"There are a lot more options now, with this new system it really gives the airmen the opportunity to focus on his or her needs instead of sitting in a room getting a basic instruction on everything and listening to things that do not pertain to them," Wargo said.
The fitness center also offers PT 101 five days a week. The program focuses on strengthening a different body part each day of the week.
"I believe this new system will be much better and will keep the airmen more accountable and establish a healthier lifestyle," Farrington said.
"The combination of going to the Better Body Better Life class and PT 101 has made a huge difference for me. I feel much better about my progression and confidence that I will pass my PT test, Wargo said. "The changes to this program have given me the opportunity to take more control of my career and at the same time improve it."
