GLENS FALLS — The Blockbuster located at 175 Broad Street in the plaza anchored by Hannaford supermarket is set to close by Nov. 23.
The store is having a closeout sale of its merchandise including video games and a DVD selection ranging from television to feature films.
Store fixtures also are for sale.
The storefront won’t be vacant for long, though, as the Hudson Falls fitness center Anytime Fitness owners plan to expand with a second location there.
A store employee who identified herself as the manager confirmed the store was set to close by Nov. 23, but she referred all other questions and comments to Blockbuster’s corporate office.
Dish Network Corp., which owns Blockbuster, said in January it would close 300 Blockbuster stores, which would affect about 3,000 employees.
After the closures, 500 stores were to remain operating in the U.S.
This closure doesn’t appear to be part of that plan since the store management told The Post-Star in January the store was not scheduled to close.
When reached Friday, Dish spokesman John Hall, based in Colorado, said he would look into the reason the store was closing, but he did not provide details in time for publication.
An email and phone call to plaza owners The Windsor Co., were not returned.
Colorado-based Dish Network in March 2011 bought the then-bankrupt video rental chain for $320 million.
Blockbuster moved into the Broad Street location in the Hannaford plaza in 2002.
A Hollywood Video store closed on Upper Glen Street in Queensbury in 2008. That had previously been operated as a Blockbuster store before it was purchased in 1998 by Hollywood Entertainment.
The closest Blockbuster, according to the company’s website, is located in Latham.
Scott and Brook Daley opened Anytime Fitness, 3736 Burgoyne Ave., Hudson Falls, five years ago.
Now the couple are in the preliminary stages of opening a second location in Glens Falls in what will be the former Blockbuster store.
They’re planning to take over the space Dec. 1, and from there they will begin renovations and hope to open in 2014.
Anytime Fitness is a fitness club franchise founded in 2002 that now has more than 2,000 franchised 24-hour gyms in 14 countries.
The company appeared in this year’s top 25 of Forbes magazine’s “America’s Most Promising Companies.”
