Orangetheory Fitness has signed a developmental contract to bring several of its studios to the Boston area.

Florida-based Orangetheory is planning to have a dozen franchise-owned locations, according to Andrew Bishins, who is developing the local market for the company. No leases have been signed for the Boston market yet.

Currently, Orangetheory has 44 studios open and 160 studios in development around the country.

The company offers a group personal training workout, broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training. Each Orangetheory gym is typically 3,000 square feet in size, with 8 to 12 employees and roughly 24 people working out per session.

“We have a really unique workout, for people who are conscious of their time and want that personal training impact,” Bishins said.

Each Orangetheory session is one hour, composed of 52 minutes of exercise and 8 minutes of stretching. Within the workout time, 26 minutes are dedicated to cardio and the other 26 minutes are for strength training. Participants wear a heart rate monitor, which tracks participants' pulses that are flashed on TV screens throughout the studio.

The goal for each workout is to spend 12 to 20 minutes in the so-called orange zone, a stage of exercise that refers to when someone's pulse is at least 84 percent of his or her maximum heart rate.

The workouts involve treadmills, rowing machines, suspended body training and dumbbells.

“This kind of ‘niche fitness’ is one of the hottest trends right now,” Bishins said of Orangetheory.

Orangetheory similar to the popular core strength and conditioning program CrossFit, but it uses more traditional fitness equipment.
