Yesterday at the Nike Fuel Forum, the lauded sportswear and sneaker company introduced the latest iteration of their fitness tracker with a cult following, the Nike FuelBand SE. While the product doesn't drop until November 1, you can pre-order it now. Among its new features are a newly-synced calibration system that accounts for activities like yoga while making it harder to "cheat" the system by simply waving your arms, it takes distance into account too. The FuelBand SE also boasts more water resistance, a tricked-out Nike+ app that debuted yesterday, and three additional colorways that jazz up the basic all-black version: pink, orange, and volt.
During the launch, Nike tapped a variety of talents from the tech sector as well as some of its star athletes, including friend of GQ Victor Cruz. We sat down with the NY Giants wide receiver, who's stylish in his own right, to talk about something the FuelBand (and Nike in general) does especially well: melding form with function. After all, during the day's event Cruz worked a rowing machine like it was nothing—wearing a red Nike hoodie, navy blue Kith Mercer pants, and red Nike Free Flyknit sneakers that we totally envied. Read on for 7 Victor Cruz-Approved Workout Style Tips (And His Favorite Sneakers).
1. There's absolutely nothing wrong with cotton T-shirts.
"I love cotton shirts. I like to see myself sweat. I like to know that I'm working out, a lot of synthetic shirts soak in sweat so you cant really feel or see it. I like to see how hard I'm working out with the sweat and stuff like that."
2. Your clothes shouldn't be too tight.
"It's all about functionality: If you can't do a leg lift because your pants are too tight or you cant do a curl because your shirt is too tight, that's a problem. It's cool to look good and work out, but you gotta be able to do the work out as well."
3. Get motivated with a stylish, functional accessory."The
FuelBand SE is very useful, on top of it being stylish&dmash;especially in all black. The single button and the way it lights up is cool, but the fact that you can track your workouts is cooler. They've added so many new features to it too, it's just the best of both worlds. Depending on where I'm going, I might have to rock it with a suit, you never know."
4. Don't forget the deodorant."Deodorant is the biggest thing for me because no matter how many workouts you do. You cant just rinse off and leave, you're still gonna smell. My deodorant of choice is
Gillette Clear Gel. Gillette has the best ones, and they're definitely my personal favorites."
5. Upgrade your gym bag."I carry this beautiful
cam Herschel bag everywhere. It's the perfect bag: It looks good, its savvy, it carries everything that I need. As long as you have a stylish backpack to put your hood, shorts, and sneakers into, you can quickly hit the gym then go about your day."
6. Athletic-inspired style still looks good outside of the locker room."I carry this beautiful
cam Herschel bag everywhere. It's the perfect bag: It looks good, its savvy, it carries everything that I need. As long as you have a stylish backpack to put your hood, shorts, and sneakers into, you can quickly hit the gym then go about your day."
7. Consider sneakers that pull double-duty in the gym and on the street"I have three of them. One is the
Nike Free Inneva Woven, those look good in the gym, they're comfortable, they're breathable, sometimes in the summer time when the weather's nice you can wear them with no socks."
Victor Cruz's Sneaker Pick: Nike Free Flynknit+"Second is the
Nike Free Flyknit+. It's a beautiful shoe. Definitely comfortable to work out in, yet stylish. I wore them out to an event the other night. You can dress 'em up or dress 'em down."
Victor Cruz's Sneaker Pick: Nike Flyknit Lunar 1+"The last one is the
Nike Flyknit Lunar 1+. They're comfortable, they come in these cool different colors—the multicolor ones are sick. You can work out in them as much as possible and they still look great."
