Free yoga class, meditation for peace set - Andalusia Star-News

Published 2:37am Saturday, September 28, 2013

Again this year, the community has an opportunity to take part in National Yoga Month with, “A Time for Yoga: A Global Community Yoga Practice.” This free community yoga practice is set for 6:45 on Mon., Sept. 30, in the parish hall of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church located on East Three Notch Street in Andalusia.

This is the third year for this free yoga class that is open to everyone, including those who have never practiced yoga as well as students at all levels. It is a yoga practice followed by savasana (relaxation) at 7:45 p.m., and then a 15-minute meditation for universal peace and well-being at 8:00 p.m.

The class is structured so anyone can comfortably take part in it. The intent of the meditation is to join others across the globe in a desire for peace. That is why at 7 p.m. in each time zone, yoga students of all experience levels are practicing yoga as an international observance that creates a wave of yoga around the globe.

While there is no charge for the class, anyone who wishes can donate to the Rice and Beans Ministry at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. This ministry provides free food each month for anyone who needs it. Those making donations can bring either a monetary donation or a food item. Items needed for their pantry are peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables and fruit, canned spaghetti/ravioli, canned soup, canned tuna/chicken

Those who plan to participate are encouraged to bring a blanket or pillow for use during the meditation period. Some yoga mats are available.

For more information call Nancy Blackmon, who is teaching the class, at 334-222-9091 or email nance-b@hotmail.com.

National Yoga Month is an observance designated by the Department of Health & Human Services designed to build awareness of yoga’s proven health benefits and to provide people with actionable guidance and tools to enhance their own well-being.
