Northfield man hopes to spread health, happiness at Yoga Dog studio in Linwood - Press of Atlantic City

Steve Mullen said that he would never open his own business again after he retired from a career as an advertising photographer.

The Northfield resident, personal trainer, and yoga and spin instructor went back on his word when he decided to open Yoga Dog, a yoga studio in Linwood.

"I want to spread health and happiness to people," Mullen said about why he decided to bite the bullet and open his own studio.

Frequently, Mullen leads yoga workshops along the East Coast for as many as 80 people, including the Wanderlust Festival in Vermont and workshops at Devotion Yoga in Hoboken.

Mullen plans to have some of the people that he has connected with in the yoga community come do workshops at Yoga Dog once the studio garners a solid following.

Yoga Dog offers a variety of classes including different levels of yoga, as well as barbells, a class that utilizes a ballet barre, and a yoga and bodyweight workout, a class that incorporates strength training techniques.

Mullen says that Yoga Dog features a type of vertical yoga where suspension training devices are used. The devices hang from the ceiling and have handles - they are meant to give the user a more intense workout.

Yoga fads like aerial yoga or hot yoga, Mullen said, tend to give the illusion of flexibility only for the duration of the class.

"Historically, yoga is a workout," Mullen said.

Mullen also plans to host drumming circles at Yoga Dog once per month, as well as an event incorporating chocolate for Valentines Day. Recently, the studio hosted two candlelit yoga classes that benefited the Newtown school shooting families - the fee for the donation class was $10.

"I've always been involved (in the community)," Mullen said, stating that the yoga studio would continue to act as a means to garner donations for different causes in the future.

The new space used to house Grace and Glory Yoga, a hot yoga studio that has since moved to Northfield.

Mullen completed major renovations to the Linwood space to make it wholly Yoga Dog.

"I did major construction," Mullen said. "It's perfect. It's just what I want. It has all the amenities that I want. I don't want any more than I have."

Mullen is offering newcomers a free first class with the incentive that the following two weeks are only $20 for unlimited classes.

So far, Mullen has been satisfied with the studio's progress in pursuing his mission to bring health and happiness to those who seek it.

Yoga Dog is located at 1055 Shore Road in Linwood. For more information, visit yogadog.co.
