Emphasis on health, fitness continues with January events at YMCAs and Rec ... - Your Houston News

The South Montgomery County YMCAs and the City of Conroe Parks and Recreation Department are hosting a few events in January to encourage people to keep their new year’s fitness resolutions.

The South Montgomery County YMCAs are hosting their annual city-wide open house this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., allowing members and guests to come and see demonstrations of all the different fitness programs the YMCA has to offer.

Levitia Simmons, the Healthy Living program director at the Shadowbend location, said that there will be a lot of events to see and try.

“We have demos, so people can see it before they try it,” Simmons said. “We want people to come out and see what we have to offer. We offer a variety of activities, so people can find something that keeps their interest.”

Some of the programs Simmons mentioned include Zumba 101, Yoga 101, Above the Barre and Core Essentials demonstrations and informative talks. Each demonstration will help teach the basics and show people what to expect from each program.

“We will also have personal training assessments,” Simmons said. “Our personal trainers will be assessing people’s body fat, flexibility and body strength, so they can get an idea of where they are physically.”

For the kids, there will be a SAQS demonstration that will go over the exercises and games involved.

“It’s about promoting speed, agility, quickness and strength through exercises, games and team sports-like drills,” Simmons said.

The South Montgomery County YMCAs will also be launching new choreography and music for the popular Les Mills workout routines BodyPUMP, BodyCOMBAT and BodyFLOW for YMCA members.

Everyone in attendance will be eligible to register to win a 70- inch flat panel TV. It is free and open to the public, without a new member joining fee.

“We have a lot of programs and we’re more than just a gym and swim,” Simmons said. “It’s not competitive and we help people set goals, set S.M.A.R.T. goals. That’s Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic Timeframe goals. We help them set SMART goals to get them on a path to wellbeing.”

The City of Conroe Parks and Recreation Department offer ongoing physical training sessions at the C.K. Ray Recreation Center to help give personal attention and valuable fitness information.

“Personal Training Sessions are available to our members that may need some assistance in starting out their new workout routine,” recreation coordinator Javier Pena said. “Or if they believe they need the accountability and extra push that you get from working out with someone else.”

Pena said that having a personal trainer can help with new workouts, avoiding injuries, targeting specific areas and modifying workouts around injuries.

The sessions last for one hour and are available by appointment only for members 18 and older with a valid membership. Options include a one-person session for $30/hour, a two-person session for $40/hour and a three- person session for $55/hour.

The Parks and Recreation Department is also hosting two water exercise events in January.

This Saturday, there will be a free water exercise boot camp from 9:30-10:30 a.m. The camp will allow attendees ages 16 and older to sample the various aquatic exercise classes the City of Conroe Aquatic Center has to offer.

“The boot camp is not as imposing as it sounds,” admissions coordinator Dan Gosselin said. “It’s a variety of activities in the water, water aerobics, Zumba, water weights.”

There is also a stroke development workshop on Jan. 18 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. for ages six and older.

“It’s mainly for people who want to work on their technique,” Gosselin said. “We have a private instructor come in, usually one of our lifeguards.”

Gosselin said that the workshop is for those who are preparing for triathlons or school swim competitions.

“It offers hands on, one-on-one attention for the swimmers,” Gosselin said.

Pre-registration for the workshop ends on Jan. 15, and the fee is $10 for residents and $12 for non-residents.
