Losing those extra lb's is always at the top of the list for New Year's Resolutions.

And many will be filling up gyms nationwide to achieve their goal.

But not everyone who tries sticks with it.

Justin Brockmoller, owner of Nebraska Athletic Club says the first three months are generally the busiest.

"A third of those people who have signed up will hit it pretty hard for three months or so and then drop off and you won't see them again until next year," he said.

Personal Trainer Allen Parr has been helping clients achieve their fitness goals for three years now.

"A typical person who walks in through the door in their mind their weight loss is always exaggerated, said Parr. "Once we do some composition testing, quite often we find out that this astronomical amount of weight that they think they need to lose is not really true."

Parr says the key to any fitness goal is to start small.

"That's probably the most important word of advice. Like I say take advantage of the natural progression as the body becomes more efficient. There are rewards so to speak in each stair step," he said.

But losing weight is only half the battle.

"If you hit the plateau or the proverbial brick wall it's always related back to your food," Parr says.

That's why achieving your health goals should be long term versus short term.

"They didn't put that thirty pounds on overnight and they are not going to lose it overnight either," said Brockmoller. "It's a process. I would encourage people to not get discouraged, stick with their program over the long haul and in the end it is going to pay off."

Brockmoller says with the new health care changes, it's going to be more important now than ever for people to stay fit.

"A year's membership is a pretty cheap investment for your health," said Brockmoller.
