Champlin grant puts more muscle in Y's fitness center - Valley Breeze

12/18/2013

SMITHFIELD - Members of the local YMCA will soon have more exercise equipment to choose from, and a higher comfort level during workouts, thanks to a major gift from the Champlin Foundations.

According to Harold Hemberger, the Y's chief executive officer, the grant of $275,560, plus donations from members, will finance a $330,000 expansion of the fitness center that will double its size to 1,800 square feet and allow the installation of air conditioning and other air quality equipment.

The grant was one of three made to Smithfield applicants. The Greenville Public Library received $37,000 for roofing, and St. Thomas Episcopal Church was awarded $19,655 for repairs to its historical bell tower.

Hemberger said the Y project will involve removing an interior wall to enlarge the fitness center, and replacement of its eight cardio machines, which are several years old, with between 15 and 20 new ones.

The nine strength training machines will be retained in the larger quarters, with the extra space and equipment expected to double the capacity of the room, currently used by 6 to 12 people at any one time, Hemberger said.

Under the renovation the center's hours will continue to be 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., he said.

Hemberger put current membership in the Y, which entitles users to the fitness center, the 35-by 75-foot pool, and a variety of programs, at about 3,000 people, counting individual and family plans.

Memberships cost $144 a year for anyone under 18; $207 for those 65 and older; $280 for adults 18 to 64; and $435 for families.

Hemberger said financial assistance is available for people who cannot afford the full cost of membership in the Y, on Deerfield Drive.
