As soon as a new year starts, new diets start as well.
Kati Mora, registered dietitian and owner of thePlate Boutique at 120 E. Broadway St., said that while she doesn’t see an increase in nutrition services until the end of January, weight loss and healthy eating is always a January goal.
“It is one of the top new year resolutions, to eat better and lose weight,” Mora said. “I think healthy eating and attempting to eat better is a great goal to have. Whether it’s the new year or not, I think that it’s something that’s very important.”
Mora said that many new year’s resolutions don’t last very long, and thePlate is aiming to fix that with this year’s “Ditch the Diet” workshop.
It’s a four part series, she said, that highlights how to look at eating healthier as more of a lifestyle change and less of a fad diet.
“The whole premise behind it is to help people ignore diet fads that come out around this time of year,” she said. “To focus on practices with will help them for a lifetime, not just in January.”
The series will talk about eating by nutrients and not by numbers, using a proper kitchen and dealing with unexpected temptations, like birthday parties and office treats.
More information about the workshop is available at aroundtheplate.org.
GreenTree Natural Grocery, 214 N. Franklin St., also sees an increase in healthy-minded customers at the beginning of each new year.
“We see a jump in the first few weeks, especially in cleanses in our supplements department - people coming in for ingredients for the ‘master cleanse’ which is maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper,” said general manager Sarah Christensen. “We hear more from customers they are doing a cleanse or looking for specific ingredients for a cleanse.”
Christensen said the store “definitely” sees an increase in customers shopping for healthy items at the beginning of January, but not as much of an increase in customers becoming owners at the co-op.
“It’s just more people checking it out. And our existing customers coming back, maybe recommitting,” Christensen said.
