New Kid on the Block: Bikram Yoga Soho
Susan Goldstein and Monique Crous were both living in New York City and practicing Bikram yoga, but they didn’t meet until they were becoming certified as Bikram instructors in Acapulco in 2008. Upon returning stateside, they ended up teaching in the same studios—and they realized they each wanted to open a studio of their own. So they decided to do it together. “That was like three years ago,” says Monique, marveling over how much work it can be to launch a business in the city. We agreed they’re fortunate to be experts at a mechanism for coping with stress.
Despite its name, Bikram Yoga Soho[2] is on Broadway just below Canal, on the top floor of the three-floor building that’s also home to the JumpLife trampoline fitness studio. The space is around 2,700 square feet total, with half devoted to a studio and the rest to a lobby/gear shop and men’s and women’s locker rooms. The studio can handle 70 or so students at a time.
“It’s hot and sweaty and really fun,” says Susan of Bikram yoga, which is done in a 105-degree room, with humidity around 50 percent. The 90-minute class is always the same, a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. “And someone brand new and someone who’s been doing it for ten years are all doing it together,” says Susan. She and Monique will each be among the teachers.
A single class is $25 ($20 for students, actors union members, and teachers), but they expect most folks will sign up for unlimited classes for $145 per month (with a four-month minimum to start), and you get two towels. Bikram Yoga Soho is also partnering with Bikram Yoga Grand Central[3] , so you can pay one low price for access to both studios.
Bikram Yoga Soho is at 404-406 Broadway (between Canal and Walker), third floor, 646-964-4957; bikramyogasohonyc.com[4] .
