(CNN) - You don't have to be a circus performer to glide through the air with the greatest of ease and get a great workout at the same time.

It's a combination of dance and strength training while hanging in the air. It's called aerial fitness.

"It takes you back to childhood time where you're exploring swinging. You feel weightless a lot of the times and that's something adults don't get to do very much," said gym instructor Amber Monson.

Participants hang from long fabrics called silks, but don't worry. Just like anything else, you don't start at the top.

"We start you very low, get you really, really comfortable and confident in what you're doing from the very beginning. Then we slowly move you up," Monson said.

The slow progression also gives people time to build up the strength, flexibility and endurance to do this

But the core gets a workout as well, building strength in the stomach and back muscles.

"I just love how my body feels. It's a really gentle resistant. It's a different pull than what you get in the weight room," said participant Dana Dragonduck.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary and aren't afraid to fly, try hanging from the silks.
