For Joseph Carzoli, fitness was always a running theme throughout his life. As a seasoned football player throughout high school, he translated his dedication for lifting weights for his hometown football team into a means of helping others achieve the same passion for fitness as him. Starting just this semester, Carzoli designed a personalized program he calls Fitness Bootcamp to get women into shape.
“Wanting people to meet their exercise goals kind of stuck with me for awhile,” Carzoli said.
After working at the Leach as a certified personal trainer, Carzoli realized there were more ways that he could help people reach their exercise goals. The challenge was identifying his cliental, which he limited to girls only.
“Most guys would probably not want to be trained by another guy just because they might feel emasculated by me knowing more than they do,” Carzoli said. “It’s not girls and guys just for their comfort. Yes I am a guy training them; however, I try to make them feel as comfortable as possible and if anything makes them feel uneasy I tell them to please tell me, and we can change something.”
To counter the possibility of awkwardness due to gender differences, Carzoli’s method is surprisingly simple.
“I think just being genuine, most of the girls out there will tell you that I do just want to help them,” Carzoli said. “If I do look at their body it’s to look at their form, not for personal reasons.”
One of Carzoli’s clients Kelsey Shaver recognizes that some girls may be hesitant before taking an all-female fitness boot camp instructed by a male. However, after taking classes with both male and female instructors, Shaver feels strongly that gender doesn’t have any affect on the workout experience.
“I have trained with both male and female instructors and I have to say I do not think it is about the gender,” Shaver said. “It’s only awkward if you make it awkward. Just kidding, but seriously, a workout is a workout, and if Joey’s doing his job correctly and professionally, which he is, then it is never awkward.”
Over the summer, Carzoli created a fitness regimen that can be personalized to each of his clients to accomplish each of their fitness goals. After gathering equipment and resources from family and friends, Carzoli found seeing his clients excel more rewarding than expected.
“Basically I got started because I wanted a job to where I could help people more and at the same time have fun helping them out and teaching them,” Carzoli said. “I try to blend what the girls are capable of with their personal goals in terms of exercise. Finding the right balance between those really helps them reach those goals.”
Reaching those goals can be met in a variety of different ways. Recently, the fitness world has gone viral with new breeds of exercise, from cross training to prancercising. Carzoli blends a variety of effective workouts in his boot camp, creating a unique experience.
“It’s basically high intensity circuit training,“ Carzoli said. “We do a lot of things with pushing sleds and pulling sleds, as well as dumbbells and kettle bells. Plyometric boxes, body weight exercises and a lot of high intensity endurance-based training between strength and cardio, a nice blend of both.“
Finding the fitness program that fits your needs can be challenging. Shaver, however, finds that what Carzoli offers separates him from other trainers that offer their own fitness programs.
“Joey’s passion and genuine care for all of us is a game changer in the face of workout instructors,” Shaver said. “It is the best workout I’ve had in 20 years.”
Not only does Carzoli’s dedication separate him in the eyes of his clients, but also the training exercises he selects are few and far to come by. One in particular, Prowler, increases the intensity involving strengthening and conditioning.
“I’m pretty sure, aside from boot camp, it [Prowler] is used only by professional football players, but maybe I’m exaggerating,” Shaver said. “If we could all pick one object of our hatred though, I’m positive it would be the prowler. If you are unfamiliar with the prowler I would advise you to get familiar, for your health.”
With rapid growing popularity, Carzoli plans on opening sessions as his current schedule fills up. Carzoli’s girls-only fitness boot camp is held at James Messer Park Monday through Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
