Midtown Yoga[1] is opening a second Cooper Street location with more of a focus on individual and small group sessions.

The Memphis-based Yoga studio signed a lease for a 1,200-square-foot building at 816 S. Cooper St., just down the road from its original location.

The new space, called Midtown Yoga Too, is slated to open in early October.

Grace Harwood[2] bought Midtown Yoga from Sarla Nichols[3] , the business’ founder, in January. Nichols opened the studio’s first location at 524 S. Cooper.

Since owning the studio, Harwood has seen a need for space which can be used for one-on-one or small group sessions.

“What we’re seeing in the yoga industry is a lot of doctors sending people to us who are recovering from injury,” she said.

These people often try to go to open yoga classes without a lot of experience.

“They really need some transitional time and someone who understands their health issues,” Harwood said.

Since Midtown Yoga’s first location hosts 55 classes a week, there isn’t much time to carve out for private instruction.

Since several Midtown Yoga instructors were already certified in yoga therapy, Harwood thought it made sense to fine new space. The company also has certified Ayurvedic instructors, where they look at eating and sleeping habits in addition to yoga practice.

The new building has three rooms. The first is an entrance area with office space. It also has a small room for private sessions and a larger room for 8-10 people.

Harwood said there are two different paths of yoga right now. One is more of a power yoga which requires a bit of sweating.

“There’s also this path which is more therapeutic and restorative,” she said. “This is a little different path but an important one.”
