LEXINGTON, Ky. (9/5/2013) – A group of Lexington runners pride themselves on physical fitness while joining together to take part in an exercise that's more than just a hobby, but a part of their lives.
The non-profit organization BLUEgrass Runners is devoted to promoting fitness, fellowship, and fun to runners of all ages and abilities. Members of the organization range from milers to marathoners, walkers to sprinters, and teenagers to veterans.
“We look at ourselves to be a place that anybody that is interested in running can join up and meet with other runners,” said BLUEgrass Runners President Valdis Zeps.
Zeps said some groups of runners train for marathons, while others run together to stay in shape. He added that the door is always open for people who want to get out and run, but are struggling to make it off the couch.
“We're inviting people interested in training for our 5K in November, to participate in a couch to 5K,” said Zeps. “They wouldn't have to be BLUEgrass Runner members. But, if they are interested in training to run a 5K, then we'll offer to help them start from the couch, then hopefully they can progress to running a 5K in November. That's open to anybody.”
The organization has structured runs throughout the week. But, you won't always find BLUEgrass Runners out on the tracks. They take a break and sit down at monthly meetings.
“We provide a structured mechanism by which here in the Bluegrass area, if there are issues related to running, it hopefully will provide a unified voice for the community,” said Zeps.
They also invite physical therapists or other health professionals to talk about issues related to health and fitness during the meetings.
Matt Reno is a member of the BLUEgrass Runners, and serves on the membership, communications, and race committees. He said the organization adds new meaning to the phrase 'going out for a run.'
“What I love about the BLUEgrass Runners is that it takes what is usually a solitary activity and turns it into a social one,” said Reno. “Through our group runs and other social events, runners can connect over a common interest and motivate each other.”
He added that being part of the club has enhanced his physical ability.
“I've certainly become a better runner, and had a lot of fun in the process, since I joined BLUEgrass Runners,” he said.
