WATSONVILLE — A new program at the Watsonville Family YMCA aims to help young children learn better concentration and how to relax.
The youth yoga program, which begins Tuesday and runs weekly through Oct. 8, helps promote "healthier, happier, more resilient children," said instructor Erika Herschbach-Mopress.
"I'm very excited to bring kids yoga into Watsonville," she said. "It is so important to cultivate inner strength for our youth and yoga can help to do so."
Through the program, the children will learn movement, songs, literature and games.
Herschbach-Mopress is a certified yoga instructor who teaches kids' yoga at Santa Cruz Yoga.
The class, which is limited to 15, is open to children ages 4 to 7. The cost is $25 for a facility member or $35 for a program participant. It will run Tuesdays from 4:30-5:15 p.m. at the YMCA, 27 Sudden St. in Watsonville.
"Yoga is gaining a lot of attention in our mainstream society today, even being referred to as a sport, but it is non-competitive and this is ideal for kids," Herschbach-Mopress said.
