Feeling a bit stressed from the holidays? Something you may want to get out of your system, like those Michael Bolton car commercials, perhaps?
The new 9Round Kickbox Fitness facility on Grand Avenue in Lindenhurst could be the place for you to get a leg up on your New Year’s fitness resolutions.
“I Love it. I was looking for a good stress reliever,” April Gerzel of Lake Villa said Saturday morning during her first workout at 9Round. “It gets my heart rate up pretty darn quick.”
Gerzel said she had been keeping an eye out for a kickbox fitness gym in the Lindenhurst/Lake Villa area and signed up quickly after it opened last week.
“I’m hoping to go 2-3 times a week. Two times a week — at least — is my goal,” she said.
One of the facility’s three trainers helped her through her first nine-round workout Saturday.
“It’s good to have someone show you the moves,” Gerzel said.
The program stresses 30-minute workouts that take customers through nine different stations that work on arm and leg strength, core, and cardio, Lindenhurst franchise owner Keith Surroz said.
“If you’re doing it three times a week, the health benefits are enormous ... gigantic,” he said.
Surroz said he was attracted to the 9Round concept after he noticed he became bored with the regular fitness routine in gyms and health clubs, where those working out often resort to watching television to address the boredom.
“9Round believes in fun as well as fitness,” he said. “And it’s fun to hit the bags.”
The national chain was founded by championship kickboxer Shannon Hudson. Surroz said he trained to be a franchise owner in South Carolina where he attended sessions on both franchise management and physical training.
Although 9Round is obviously connected to kickboxing, Surroz said the intention isn’t to create UFC contenders.
“We’re not here to create kickboxers. None of them are going to fight,” he said. “It’s just a fun way to get in shape.”
The primary demographic for the kickbox workout is those age 18-47, but Surroz said he already has at least one customer in his 60s.
