Burdick to add more fitness areas, offices
Campus Recreation Services had a successful presentation with bidders Sept. 19 on the 95,000 square foot expansion of Burdick Hall.
“The various architects that are interested in proposing and applying for the job were at the meeting,” Director of Architecture and Engineering David Mayhew said. “The architects interested in applying for the job submit qualifications and we select the architect that we feel is the best match for our project based on their experience.”
The expansion will include multi-purpose athletic courts, additional fitness areas, spinning studios and group exercise studios, additional space for outdoor adventure pursuits, office and support spaces, he said.
The additions for this project are on the south side of the building, although updates to kinesiology offices and classrooms are currently taking place in a separate project on the north side.
“The project is expected to create a new front of the building facing the Rec fields,” he said.
This project on the south side will complete the pedestrian walkway to West Village, Mayhew said. The design is expected to begin spring 2014 and construction will be completed in spring 2017.
“We had more people than we expected to show up [at the meeting],” Mayhew said. “There’s a lot of interest in this project. In addition, adding the much needed square footing and resources it will give Campus Recreation Services a real presence on the campus.”
