Fitness club honors firefighters with workout - Scottsbluff Star Herald

A local group of fitness enthusiasts gathered recently to honor fallen firefighters.

Members of CrossFit Scottsbluff, a fitness center located on the corner of Avenue I and South Beltline, assembled to execute a workout in remembrance of 19 firefighters killed in an Arizona blaze in June.

Valley Ambulance Services, the Scottsbluff Fire Department, and the Gering Volunteer Fire Department stopped in to show their support as the CrossFit team performed six rounds of seven pull-ups, 30 bodyweight squats, 19 power clean lifts and a 400-meter run. The workout was designed to be similar to what firemen do for their physical fitness testing.

CrossFit Trainer Alison Anderson said the Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighting squad stayed together as a team until the end and CrossFit gyms nationwide want to unite and celebrate their lives.

“They worked together and died together and now we’re coming together as a group to remember them and all that they did,” she said.

CrossFit Scottsbluff became affiliated with the CrossFit brand of fitness training in June and Anderson said it is now the only affiliated CrossFit gym in the Panhandle. Led by certified trainers, the gym’s workouts are founded on functional, movement-based maneuvers, such as pushups, pull-ups, jumps, running and various Olympic-type lifts.

With the goal of promoting overall fitness and health, Anderson said the workouts can be scaled up or down based on ability and participants are encouraged to work their way up and progress with the program over time.

“The workouts are based on innate, natural movements,” she said. “The workouts we do here are like having a competition against yourself.”
