From Mr Guy Wroble.
Sir, Gideon Rachman implies that Frau Merkel’s policies are not in keeping with Germany’s status in the world (“Germany is a vegetarian in a world full of carnivores[1] ”, Comment, September 10). But if one looks at the animal kingdom one realises that there are vastly more vegetarians than meat eaters.
Carnivores primarily prey on the old, the sick, the weak, and the lame or those who decide to go off on their own. In terms of countries, one could think of nations that have lost their economic and political vibrancy, that have piled up huge debts that cripple their progress, that injure themselves in meaningless fights in far-off places and which decide that they do not need the support of the rest of the community before taking action.
While there are several countries which may fit this description, Germany is not one of them. In the world which has carnivores, a healthy and fit vegetarian is not the easiest prey.
