Group for young widows helps heal through yoga, travel - KARE

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Breanne Sill and Julie-Anne Carlson discovered the healing powers of yoga at a time when life brought them to their knees.

Both had recently lost their husbands to cancer and both were new mothers.

The women met in a grief support group last year, but as young widows, they needed more. As they began making plans for difficult holidays like Valentine's Day, they set out to create a community of support with others in the same situation.

"We cried together, laughed together, put the kids to bed together, and then we started saying, 'I've never gone to a bed and breakfast,' Julie said.

"I have never been to California, and talking about different places we wished we had gone to with the boys but were never able to," said Sill.

The friends began to travel together, and they learned yoga could also carry them through the journey.

"We both decided we wanted to become yoga instructors ourselves and be able to share with other widows and widowers how yoga can come into the grief journey and help with your process," said Sill.

This summer, they've launched a new support group called Embrace the Journey which will help other widows become warriors of loss. They are seeking to grow in membership.

Embrace the Journey has planned a getaway for other young widows Oct. 25-27 at the Habberstad House in Lanesboro. Learn more by visiting www.embracethejourneymn.com[1] .
