CHARLESTON — Helping unload a truck with plenty more work to be done, Jim Di Naso paused for a moment to enjoy.
“This brings Charleston High School up to par with modern day strength and equipment,” said Di Naso, co-owner of the Body Club and a member of the high school’s fitness room renovation committee. “The old equipment was so antiquated. Now it brings us up to the other schools. Charleston now has if not the best one of the best in the (Apollo) Conference.
“Basically what you find here is what you would find in an NFL or professional sports facility.”
Shining wooden platforms with Charleston High School logo and the equipment signified the $54,000 phase two of renovations is now achieved.
To be called the Charleston High School fitness room, it includes five self-spotting stations for Olympic and power lifting as well as Nautilus equipment.
Physical education classes, interscholastic athletes, community groups like the Charleston Parks & Recreation Department’s Weightlifting Club and faculty/staff are to benefit with the room able to service multiple groups at one time.
Whether you were asking Paul Stranz, Charleston’s soccer coach, or Paul Stranz, Charleston’s physical education teacher, he was happy.
“It’s put together for both,” Stranz said. “It’s ideal for my weightlifting class. They can use it for upper and lower body.”
Charleston football coach Brian Halsey was pleased as well.
“Man, it’s coming together,” Halsey said. “It’s beautiful and we’re blessed to be at this point. We’re not quite done in terms of fundraising. It’s a beautiful facility. It’s taking shape. It’s good for our young people to see who are going to use it, and thanks a ton for the gracious donations.”
The committee is still hoping to raise money for phase three that would include cardiovascular equipment.
Those looking to help can call Charleston High School.
Over the summer the committee brought in $3,550 from the sale and auction of old equipment. Still available for an offer is a let press/sled and Nautilus hip extension machine.
Those interested in donating or purchasing the available equipment can be made by contacting Charleston High School Athletic Director Jim Wood at WoodW@charleston.k12.il.us or 217-639-5026.
Wood already expresses plenty of thanks.
“There were a lot of people who have donated time and money for this,” he said.
