Retro Fitness of Tenafly - NorthJersey.com

Whether you want to lose weight, get toned, bronze your body or just live a healthier lifestyle, Retro Fitness in Tenafly[1] might be the gym you’ve been looking for. The 10,000-square-foot facility, one of many in the predominantly East Coast chain that offers low-cost monthly membership fees, opened in December 2011 under the ownership of Scott Sosnik, a certified public accountant by trade, and his wife Stephanie.

On Sept. 28, there will be a fundraiser at the facility to benefit Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center.

On Sept. 28, there will be a fundraiser at the facility to benefit Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center.

"It was the accountant’s old fashioned way; I saw a business a client had that was a very successful business," says Scott Sosnik on why he decided to buy into the Retro Fitness chain. "Tenafly[2] was a destination that Retro Fitness corporate was truly interested in. The demographics lend itself to an active lifestyle. When people do come in, no matter what price point applies to them, they say ‘wow, I can work out here – this is a nice place’.

While Retro Fitness is known for its low $19.99 per month membership, it’s high on amenities. State-of-the-art equipment, including three different types of circuit equipment and cardio equipment with personal LCD screens encompass the fitness amenities and are supplemented by personal training services and fitness classes. A smoothie bar, tanning, and a pro shop are just a few of the other offerings at Retro Fitness. Sosnik says one benefit many clients value is the convenience of being able to visit any Retro Fitness in the chain, all of which provide the same services clients are accustomed to at their regularly visited Retro Fitness.

"It’s like a big fraternity," says Sosnik. "When you join Retro, you can use any Retro. People find out how valuable that is; the convenience of that."

Sosnik says that one of the most important rules to live by in the gym business is that patrons value working out in a clean, sanitary facility.

He said he and his wife have committed to keeping the center spotless, hiring a night crew to scrub top to bottom seven days a week, while recently taking on a part-time cleaner for daytime hours.

"In real estate, they say it’s location, location, location," says Sosnik. "We learned in gyms, it’s clean, clean, clean."

Keeping with the mantra of healthy lifestyles for its membership and surrounding community, Retro Fitness of Tenafly[3] delves into charitable events as well, such as the upcoming open house fundraiser it will hold Sept. 28 to support Englewood[4] Hospital and Medical Center’s The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center. The event will mirror last year’s fundraiser that raised approximately $5,000 for the The Heart and Vascular Institute at the hospital.

"The hospital is very representative of the community," says Sosnik. "That day, the doors of the gym are open at no charge with money spent at the gym for various merchandise – whether clothing, the juice bar or food products – going to the hospital."

Sosnik says the fundraising event also includes fitness classes with extended times at discounted rates. There will also be free giveaways and many other local businesses will be on hand to provide food, drinks and other merchandise to support the cause.
