Looking to gain some muscle, but don’t have hours to spend at the gym lifting weights? Maybe The Change Fitness, located at 15706 Pomerado Road, Suite S-106 in Poway, is right for you.
The Change Fitness, owned and operated by certified fitness trainer Chris Kanakaris, practices resistance strength training in his unique “Change Total Fitness System.” Kanakaris, who has 13 years of experience in fitness training, was educated in the workout philosophy of Arthur Jones, the inventor of the Nautilus workout system.
“[The Change Total Fitness System] is a method of strength training where you work each individual muscle group intensely, reaching muscular failure before quickly moving on to the next station,” said Kanakaris. “The goal is metabolic fitness.”
While Kanakaris has always been into fitness, fitness hasn’t always been his job. He grew up in San Diego, and after college worked as a special education teacher. “I became dissatisfied with teaching,” said Kanakaris, “because I wasn’t reaching goals. I’m very goal oriented.” After leaving teaching, Kanakaris began working part time in La Jolla with a man who taught him about resistance training. “I’ve always been interested in weight training,” said Kanakaris. Seven years ago, Kanakaris and his wife moved to Poway, and eventually, Kanakaris opened his own full-time fitness training business.
The Change Fitness offers private, one-on-one training sessions, where you will never have to wait for a machine. Each session is 30 minutes long, with the workout lasting about 20 minutes. Kanakaris said the workout highly involves the cardiovascular system, and increases your ability to do hard labor for a long period of time. “You get both in one shot, in a very time-efficient manner,” said Kanakaris.
Due to the intensity of the workout, Kanakaris said that using his system, you should only need to work out once or twice a week. “[The workout] is very intense and very safe at the same time,” said Kanakaris. “The intensity of the exercise makes it effective, and more intense means more safe.” Kanakaris explained that as you work your muscles to exhaustion, you are less likely to push yourself to injury, because you’re simply too weak to at the end of the station.
“I’ve never had any injuries [while training people],” said Kanakaris, who said he trains everyone from professional athletes to a 103-year-old woman. “I don’t claim it’s a fun workout, but it’s effective and safe.”
The Change Fitness is available for workout time 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday – Saturday. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 858-382-4517 or visit www.thechangefitness.com[1] .
