TAMPA – The thunder roared, there was a lightning scare, and the ground was a little bit damp, but there were plenty of people ready to practice yoga at Baybridge Park in Westchase last Monday.

Three nights a week, instructor Jamie Foubister, a native of England, teaches donation-based yoga classes in the park, near Westchase Village. The classes differ, but Foubister’s clients include beginners to advanced yoga practitioners.

Foubister started practicing yoga at the age of 16 in England. By the time he moved to Florida, he was immersed in the practice. And while he left for Colorado a few years back, he settled back in Tampa Bay and started his practice in Westchase last year.

There are three kinds of classes, all starting at 6 p.m. at Baybridge Park. On Mondays, Deep Kosha Yoga is offered. It is a discipline that offers a way, Foubister said, to find a greater sense of relaxation, happiness, and well-being. The Sanskrit word Kosha means veils, and it relates to the five layers of our being.

“We go through more yoga positions and bring relief that goes beyond just the body,” Foubister said. “There are lots of balls and props involved. It brings a lot of relief.”

Tuesdays are for balanced flow yoga. It’s a lot more work, but the participants are trained in a more traditional style of yoga. There is a lot more constant movement.

Wednesdays are for Balanced Path Hatha Yoga. It what most people are used to when they think of yoga and it doesn’t require as much effort as the previous two days.

“It’s more traditional. We break it down and we spend more time sitting and making poses,” Foubister said.

Foubister has been running his Yoga in the Park for a year now and said hopes to increase attendance, currently averaging about 10 people a class. He doesn’t charge a fee, but looks for donations. Beginners are asked to bring along a mat, a towel, and plenty of water. Sunscreen and bug spray are also helpful. With the Florida heat, it is advisable to wear cool clothing.
