Yoga for veterans - Casper Journal

Bob Hardesty, Casper, is 84, a Korean War veteran and a student of yoga. He’s attending a yoga class offered free to veterans at Healthy Life Studio.

“My daughter said, ‘Dad, as old as you are, you better go up and have some fun.’”

Hardesty has been to class three times and said it’s helping him stay in shape. “I enjoy the stretching, deep breathing and I think it’s good for me, because I’m a little on the stiff side. I need to limber up,” commented Hardesty.

The class is offered from 4-5 p.m. Wednesdays at Healthy Life Studio in the Sunrise Shopping Center, and is for anyone who’s been in the armed services.

“We spend a little time in meditation and bring awareness to our breath,” explained Healthy Life Studio yoga instructor Theresa Wiegand. “We spend time with some gentle yoga moves, getting everyone familiar with the most basic poses, getting in touch with our bodies. It’s a lot of relaxation.”

Wiegand hopes to share the healing benefits of yoga with a larger audience.

“There’s so much pain out there and populations of folks out there who can’t get to a regular yoga class and I just wanted to get to the veterans who maybe wouldn’t come to a regular class.”

If you go, wear comfortable clothes for stretching.
