Dr. Oz reveals weight-loss tips from Good Morning America star who lost 72 lbs - Examiner.com

Dr. Oz discussed weight-loss tips with "Good Morning America" contributor Tory Johnson on the Dec. 23 episode[1] of the Dr. Oz Show. (This episode originally aired Oct. 22).

Johnson lost 72 pounds in one year after being told by an ABC News executive that she could lose her TV job if she didn't slim down.

Tory told Dr. Oz that conversation motivated her to immediately start a low-carb diet and begin exercising regularly. Johnson detailed her weight loss journey in her book, "The Shift."

She never used the words 'fat, diet or obesity,' but her message was clear: I needed to lose weight. Let’s face it: on TV looks matter. In my own way, I took her words to mean 'lose weight or lose your job,' even though she didn’t come close to making that threat."

Tory, who had been overweight all her life, told Dr. Oz that losing weight is a mental process more than a physical one. Seeing food as fuel (instead of something to turn to when she's bored or unhappy) helped Tory embrace healthy eating as a lifestyle, not a short-term fix.

Johnson shared her other diet tips with Dr. Oz:

  1. Weigh yourself every day. "If I’m up, I’m more determined," she said. "If I’m down, I’m more motivated."

  2. Read nutrition labels. "Paying attention to these details enables me to make smart food choices," said Johnson.

  3. Wear red nail polish. "You can’t stick wet nails into a bag of chips."

  4. Snack healthfully. Having healthy snacks around curbs overeating, Johnson told Dr. Oz.

  5. Keep fat pictures around. "There’s nothing like dozens of pictures of my (former) triple chin to stay the course."

  6. No cheat days. "Rewarding a week of healthy eating with cake and cookies is akin to an alcoholic celebrating a month of sobriety with a few beers," she said. "It doesn’t work."
