More yoga for the holidays

SARASOTA -- The holiday yoga tradition continues at Yoga from the Heart, 2010 Pine Terrace, Sarasota. The yoga studio will be hosting a class from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Christmas morning and a New Year's Day class from 10 a.m. to noon.

"The Christmas class started out for our clients who don't celebrate Christmas. For them, Christmas was a day for hanging around and we said kind of jokingly, 'We can do some yoga,' " said Lynn Burgess, owner of the yoga studio.

But the class attracted people who celebrated Christmas, too.

"We were really kind of blown away by how many came," said Burgess.

Every year, an eclectic blend shows up that includes people visiting from up North for the holidays, she said.

Cost is $30 Christmas Day or $40 for the New Year's Day class. Call 941-929-9878 or visit www.yogafromtheheart.com.

Lecture: Cancer and Social Security

SARASOTA -- Cancer patients who aren't able to work may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. But understanding what qualifies as a disability and how to apply can be complicated.

An upcoming talk, "Cancer Support and Social Security Disability -- How Do You Qualify and What Does It Mean?", is designed to clear confusion. The presentation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Center for Building Hope, 5481 Communications Parkway, Sarasota.

Presenters will be Gary W. Parker, emeritus attorney from Legal Aid of Manasota and Kathy Powell McSteen, a Social Security counselor.

"With Social Security disability, it's very important to understand how your problems can be documented and what Social Security needs to know to make the right decision for you," said McSteen.

"Just a diagnosis of cancer does not mean an individual is disabled," she said. "Many cancer patients are able to work during their cancer treatment.

But some can't because of longer-term side effects or pre-existing conditions that become exacerbated, she said.

The definition of disability will vary, however, depending on the person's age and what type of work was done in the past., said McSteen. Work history also is a factor; people who haven't paid into the Social Security system aren't eligible.

The talk is free. Call 941-921-5539 to register.
