Kid yoga: From musical mayhem to meditation - MyFox Tampa Bay

NEW PORT RICHEY (FOX 13) -

After a hectic day at Longleaf Learning Center, a group of preschoolers wind down with some yoga.

"Peace begins with us," they repeat, with their yoga instructor, Sarah Hawks leading the mantra.

"We meditate for what reasons you guys. What do you think?" she asked, " If you're feeling...?"

"Sad," answers one little girl.

"Sad, perfect answer," said Sarah, "You guys are such good little yogis."

After an entire day of studying, these kids can enjoy some active yoga playtime.

"Children learn through play, so we've turned this into a playful way for them to do yoga," Sarah explained.

From cat poses to shaky fun moves, this class gets the entire class moving. Well, almost the entire class. One little boy, who's new, seems a little shy at first.

"The minute that he saw we were all laughing, dancing, singing, he started dancing to the songs, he started clapping," Sarah explained.

"I did downward dog," said little Alexandra Marzo, a cute little 4-year-old wearing glasses.

Like Alexandra, these kids are all getting quite the workout.

"The way that we have them up and down, up and down, throughout the whole class, it's a lot of cardio!" exclaimed Sarah.

Bella Arwood, 4, also loves all the fun and play.

"We do a silly monkey dance!" she said, with a smile.

"It's also a lot of focus, so by the time we're done, they're pretty wiped out," the instructor told us.

So that's when it's time to go from musical mayhem to meditation: Kids channeling their inner chakras and learning to chill after a long day of preschool.

"They can dream up anything that they want to and they can lay there and just imagine it."
