LIBERTYVILLE — Sixty years ago, America’s senior citizens got their exercise by cutting the grass with a push mower, pulling laundry through a wringer washer and walking to buy a carton of milk. While today’s seniors are enjoying the labor-saving devices all around us, they know they need to keep in shape to maintain their health and independence long into their golden years.

With that in mind, two local seniors recently opened a boutique fitness business in Libertyville with classes tailored to the over 55 age group. Rehabitations, Inc. founders John Keller and Bernie Klos see their program filling a need for specialized exercise programs aimed at preserving and improving the well-being of their peers.

“We offer adult group fitness classes with the individual in mind,” Klos said. For example, the instructors will modify exercises to meet each individual’s particular cognitive or physical needs. The program focuses on stretching for flexibility, strength, balance and cardio-respiratory conditioning.

“When I retired about seven years ago, I decided to devote more time to my personal fitness program,” said Keller. “I found that there were not a lot classes focusing specifically on my needs or my age group.

“Available exercise classes were either too easy or too difficult. I developed a unique approach to adult exercise that works very well for me and I feel meets the need of our age group,” said Keller.

The men continually vary the program to keep the routine fresh. Periodic group outdoor walks and refreshments are also offered to help maintain the friendly atmosphere.

Both Keller and Klos have completed rigorous training certifications with the YMCA’s of America, American Council on Exercise andAerobics and Fitness Association of America. They also teach multi-level exercise classes through the Vernon Hills Park District.

Classes are $3 a session, and there is no membership or monthly fee. Currently classes are offered 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Masonic Lodge, 356 Brainerd Ave. in downtown Libertyville. Free parking is available at the rear of the building.
