Mediterranean Diet Patterns Result in Better Health Late in Life

According to a latest U. S. study, women who followed a Mediterranean-style diet, starting from their midlife, were able to maintain their health and well-being better than others.

These women were able to keep up a good health chart up to the age of 70, according to the survey.

The researchers conducted the study of about 10,670 women, who were in their late 50s and early 60s. The survey was conducted in the Nurses Health Study and during the survey the women were asked about their diet.

The same women were asked about their health about 15 years later in order to compile the results.

Epidemiologist Cécilia Samieri of the French National Institute of Health and her co-authors concluded in Monday's online Annals of Internal Medicine that greater quality of diet at midlife was strongly connected with increased odds of good health and well-being among individuals existing till older ages.

They also said, "Maintaining physical, cognitive, and mental health with aging may provide a more powerful incentive for dietary change than simply prolonging life or avoiding any single chronic disease".

According to the researchers, a healthy diet pattern includes plant foods, whole grains, and fish with restrained intake of alcohol and lower intake of red and processed meats.
