24 Hour Fitness Offers Complimentary Workouts for Thanksgiving - Broadway World

24 Hour Fitness[1] is celebrating the spirit of the holidays by offering complimentary workouts for Thanksgiving. Today through Nov. 30, members and guests will have all club access to more than 400 24 Hour Fitness clubs across the country.

24 Hour Fitness is hoping to encourage Americans to maintain their exercise regimes during the holidays. The average American consumes more than 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day alone, according to the Caloric Control Council, giving everyone a reason to stay active.

While conventional wisdom holds that the average person gains 5 to 7 pounds during the holidays, a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Medical University of South Carolina found that average weight gain is approximately 1 pound. The researchers found that this weight gain was still present a year later for 85 percent of study participants.

"One extra pound each year adds up over time, and the holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year when people indulge - so it's easy to let your fitness routine slip," said Bobbi Quick, senior director of fitness operations, 24 Hour Fitness. "This makes it a critical time to stay committed to your fitness goals. New Year's is just around the corner and a head start can be the perfect motivational boost so January 1 doesn't feel so overwhelming."

24 Hour Fitness offers the following tips to jump-start your New Year's resolutions during the busy holiday season:

  • Get social - Take advantage of the complimentary workouts at 24 Hour Fitness clubs during the week of Thanksgiving with friends. Meet them at the gym for a pre-shopping group exercise class, like Zumba. It will give you an energy boost for a long day on your feet. Even better, after the big meal, round everyone up for a brisk walk or a game of football.

  • Make plans - Schedule your workouts like all your other activities so you'll be sure to make time for everything that matters. If you've mastered planning the big get-together, planning a 30-minute cardio routine will be a breeze.

  • Squeeze it in - Even if you only have 15 minutes, a quick workout can still help you stay fit. If you're busier than most, try to think of ways to integrate fitness into your day. For example, 50 jumping jacks between basting the turkey and setting the table, can serve as a mental reminder that you're committed to your fitness goals.

  • Commit to Racing - Many cities and towns host Thanksgiving Day runs and turkey trots. Competing in your local race will burn calories in advance of turkey time, and serve as an inspiration for friends and family to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the holidays.

To take advantage of the complimentary workouts, guests can simply stop by a 24 Hour Fitness club between now and Nov. 30. *Must be at least 18 years of age and present valid identification.
