It's National Eating Healthy Day, and local organizations are teaming up to spread the message. YNN's Carmella Mataloni reports.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- In honor of National Healthy Eating Day, the American Heart Association is urging people across the country to make better nutrition choices.

According to the American Heart Association, 60 percent of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Obesity can lead to additional health risks, including heart disease and stroke. Eating healthier can easily reduce those risks.

Some recommendations for healthier eating include:

•At least 4.5 cups of fruits or veggies per day

•At least three 1 ounce equivalent servings of fiber per day

•At least two 3.5 ounce servings of fish per week

•At least four servings of nuts and seeds per week

"Nationally there is the obesity trend we are seeing, and we really want to just focus on healthy eating with kids and parents, and across all ages with this trend of picking healthier options," said Julie Tucker, a Registered Dietician for Broome Tioga BOCES.

Sugar sweetened beverages and processed meats should also be consumed in light moderation. It's important to keep these recommendations in mind during the busy holiday season.
