17-year-old Kerinne Dorris goes to the gym every single day, but her fascination with fitness had a purpose this weekend. The Greater Nanticoke Area High School student organized an event at the Nanticoke Armory for her senior project. Supporters worked up a sweat with high-energy hip-hop, kickboxing and zumba routines.
"I'm going to try to do all of them if I can!" said Dorris. "I might get pooped out, but I'll try!"
Dorris is raising money for an organization called "Fallen Officers Remembered". The group provides law enforcement officers with bulletproof vests.
"A lot of people are still unaware that part-time officers have to provide their own vest, and they are costly," said Gina Boyle.
Boyle co-founded "Fallen Officers Remembered" after her brother Rodney Pocceschi was killed in the line of duty in 2003. The "Fitness For A Cause" fundraiser will help purchase a vest for a veteran in law enforcement. Dorris said she chose this program because she comes from a military family.
"My father is in the Army, and he's actually getting ready to deploy soon," said Dorris.
"I think the passion is deep within her heart, because of what her father does, and I hope she inspires other kids," said Boyle.
Dorris said her father will be in Afghanistan when she graduates, but he's proud of her goal to help an officer in need.
"I'm hoping that we can raise enough money to get at least one bulletproof vest to save an officer."
