Hudson -- The district, the American Dairy Association and National Football League have teamed up to increase daily physical activity for students, teachers and staffers.
As part of the collaboration, two representatives of the district's team, Suzanne Hirsch, high school family and consumer sciences teacher and Bo Lori, a Hudson High School senior, were invited to First Energy Field Oct. 22 to take part in the "Fuel Up To Play 60 Training Camp" to share and listen to ideas and lesson plans on fitness.
The training camp was open to individuals who helped with school breakfast programs or other school nutrition and physical fitness initiatives, according to Jan Diamond of the American Dairy Association.
"The event was to jump start the school year and excite teachers and kids to eat healthy, 'fuel up,' and have 60 minutes of physical activity per day, 'play 60,'" Hirsch said. "The NFL is part-sponsor and teams all over work with schools."
Hirsch also attended last year's training camp.
"I was invited last year because they chose me out from the pool of teachers who submitted a grant application," Hirsch, adviser to the HHS Fitness and Wellness Club, said. "I was chosen this year because in last year's grant I created a lesson plan for eating healthy using several iPad apps and I was asked to present and bring students with me."
Hirsch chose Bo and two other students.
"[Bo] completed the lesson last year so I asked him and two other students to go with me," Hirsch said. "The two other students did not want to miss school."
For their participation, Hirsch and Bo received a variety of items, including a T-shirt, notebooks, autographed football and other gear for participating.
"We listened to a lot of talks and got to go onto the Brown's field," Bo said. "There were a lot of cool talks about what other school are doing and we got to share what we are doing in class."
Bo, who described himself as a "pretty active kid," said he learned the importance of nutrition, especially calcium, to a daily diet, through the class.
Hudson High School's participation last year earned a "Fuel up to Play 60" banner school designation, according to Hirsch.
The school took part in a program of healthy eating and physical activity and won a variety of items including: a banner for completing six steps to a touchdown last year, a football signed by Joe Thomas, a left offensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns and a jersey, also signed by Thomas, Hirsch said.
"We also were given almost $4,000 in grant money to bring in a yoga instructor and to have LuLus Yogurt pass out samples," Hirsch said. "Lulus matched the amount we had to buy yogurt."
Some of the steps last year included a physical activity play, a PTO 5K and 1-mile fun fitness run promoted by the Fitness and Wellness Club, an after school run event and a club booth at the PTA Wellness Fair where healthy eating was promoted with the help of several iPad apps, Hirsch said.
The school began its six-step march to a touchdown earlier this year.
"This year our kick off was the pedometer contest," he said. "We [Hirsch's students] had a pedometer contest against the principals. We wore pedometers for one week and reported the results."
The students beat the principals "feet down," Hirsch said.
"Chipotle and Vertical Runner supplied us with prizes for the contest --water bottles and Chipotle meal cards," he said. "Fitness and Wellness Club kids are also playing basketball after school at a off-site court in the neighborhood for fun and exercise."
The club has also sponsored a yogurt tasting as well as brought a yoga instructor to the class.
"Students are working on eating healthier and adding physical activity to their day," Hirsch said. "The Fitness and Wellness Club is on board with the activities, as well.
