Hard to believe for those of us who grew up watching Lisa Whelchel on "The Facts of Life" - but the star is now 50 years old. And, she told People magazine on November 24[1] , Lisa's facing the facts that the body doesn't recover as easily as you grow older.
Determined to maintain her weight, Lisa decided to take a two-pronged approach to staying fit and fabulous: Eating less and exercising more. And that includes coming out with her own fitness DVD.
"I decided to make my own exercise video," Lisa told People. "It's a doable full-body workout that you can do in 20 minutes. It has stretching, resistance, cardio and a cool down. Exercise is different once you get a little older. It doesn't always have to be high impact."
Lisa admits that her DVD, entitled "Lisa Whelchel's Everyday Workout for the Everyday Woman[2] ," may not be the calorie-crunching workout that some women want. But she feels that it's ideal for those who want to take that first step towards fitness.
"If you're 20 and want to get into that tiny black dress, this may not be the workout for you," she notes. "But there are a lot of women who are like I was: I was low energy. Gravity was showing up in the wrong places. I wanted to be healthy and not re-injure myself. Also, it would be nice if I could fit into the smaller jeans in the back of the closet!"
And with that goal, Lisa also emphasizes the importance of diet to complete the transformation.
"The biggest step is getting off your couch to work out," she adds. "You have to find ways that you can exercise. Once you start, you'll be motivated to eat a little bit healthier, maybe find some other forms of exercise. When I do it, I definitely see results. I don't end up looking like Jillian Michaels, but I feel and look better."
In addition to "The Facts of Life," Lisa gained fame for appearing on "Survivor." She surprised some fans by her go-to-it attitude.
"I'm outdoorsy," she told People. "I love to exercise and be outside. I don't care what I'm wearing, and I don't care if I'm uncomfortable. I am nothing like Blair (the character that she portrayed on "The Facts of Life")."
