Yoga, kickboxing offered at Outback - Newcanaannewsonline

New Canaan's Outback Teen Center[1] is offering a one-hour yoga and kickboxing class for adults.

Yoga classes are offered at 9:15 a.m. Mondays and Fridays, and at noon Wednesdays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, kickboxing will be offered at 9:30 a.m.

Yoga classes are $15 per class. The next two-day-a-week kickboxing series begins Tuesday, Nov. 5, and runs through Thursday, Dec. 5. For nine classes over five weeks, the cost is $165. Walk-ins at $25 per class also are available.

New programs for the community are a natural extension of the Outback's use by young people over its 12-year history. Enrichment and wellness classes for adults now make great use of the main floor space on a weekly basis. The Outback has partnered with instructors Julie Deery[2] and Anthony Smetak[3] for the yoga and kickboxing classes.

Deery, a graduate of the University of Vermont[4] , was a student of ballet and contemporary dance as a young adult and has been practicing yoga for more than 15 years. After a music business career in New York City, she received a Connecticut certified yoga instructors certificate from Saraswati's Yoga Joint in Norwalk in 2011. She has been teaching private and group classes since.

"Julie's class is not a typical yoga class," Peggy Challe[5] , a yoga regular and Outback board member, said.

"Her energy is really special. It is a good workout, as well as relaxing. Her students definitely appreciate the personalized attention."

Smetak is the owner, manager and chief instructor of Kempo Academy[6] in New Canaan. After earning an MBA in finance, he pursued a decade-long career in the financial sector. Smetak graduated from the Instructors College for Teaching of the Martial Arts[7] , and is nationally ranked at 1st degree black belt in Chinese Kempo.

"Kickboxing at the Outback with Anthony is an intensive workout with good self-defense techniques included," Janet Luciano[8] , a regular attendee, said. "We get lots of unique, individualized attention, which completes a great training. Not only do I find myself in much better shape, I have a blast in his classes."

Smetak also is offering a teen kickboxing series starting on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The one-hour class begins at 3 p.m. and will run until Dec. 18.
